Review: I know, I know. This will incontrovertibly attract a lot of hate from die-hard Dark Knight fans, but guess what? Im one of those who thinks Nolan is the epitome of how to make a perfect superhero spectacle. Or at least, I was until tonight. This film will blow your mind. Quite literally, it is jam-packed with edge-of-your-seat action thrills and pure comedic gold. Dont be expecting a moody companion piece like that of Nolans trilogy, or Man of Steel. It keeps more in touch with Avengers, although its a lot funnier and really builds upon the upcoming Infinity Gauntlet arc. The actors are incredible, matching the character developments, the dialogue and action sequences are spectacular and the visual effects should surely earn a nod come Oscar time, as Id personally put them on par with those seen in the recent Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The run length compliments the well-scripted pacing of the movie itself, whilst plenty of interesting secondary characters litter Guardians with an ensemble cast that has exceeded anything yet seen in the Marvel/DC movie worlds. I dont pertain to the DC versus Marvel argument, but this masterpiece alone has certainly put Marvel on the front foot in terms of cinema outings, far surpassing the very enjoyable Man of Steel and, I believe, edging out Nolans trilogy and then some. I thoroughly recommend this for any with a borderline sci-fi/superhero love, and advise you to remain for the tantalising post-credits scene, although many of the non-comic fans might not get the references. Easily a perfect ten out of ten for me.

But jennifer lawrence and Evan Peters at Quicksilver steal the movie. Quicksilver may not look so cool but he is the coolest guy in the whole movie. Believe me, this movie is worth your bucks. Moreover there are a bunch of new x men characters introduced in the movie which make it more enjoyable.Bryan Singer has done complete justice to this movie. And there is one scene just halfway through the movie which is worth watching fifty times. I am thoroughly excited to see the next entry entry in series which is being called Apocalypse.The only shortcoming in the movie is the runtime which feels a little less being only 130 mins. Rest of the movie is a jigsaw which fits together in a wondrous puzzle.So you must go to see this movie. Every element is in a balanced form. Even the soundtrack is fitting. Happy watching !!!!

Review: First of all, watch this Finding Fanny in English if possible & not the Hindi Dubbed version. The English version is better.Its a niche film & if you like full on bollywood masala crap, this movie is not for you. Its for an intelligent audience. It has brilliant performance from veteran actors Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur & Dimple Kapadia. Young actors Deepika Padukone & Arjun Kapoor surprisingly hold their own in front of these veterans, also their chemistry is very refreshing.The screenplay & direction by Homi Adjania is quirky & amazing. I remember I was a little disappointed with his last film Cocktail because I was not expecting something like that from him after the mind-blowing Being Cyrus (which again was an off-beat film). But after watching Finding Fanny I can say that hes back to being his old self which is a good thing. We need more directors like him & more intelligent cinema than mindless masala crap which bollywood serves these days.A special mention for Deepika who not only looks breathtakingly beautiful but also gave another fine performance. After her 4 back to back superhits past year, I wasnt expecting Deepika to do a niche film like Finding Fanny but I was wrong. Review: I went to see winters tale this weekend and I had so many different emotions when I watched it. First, Colin Farrell is wonderful...hes really great in this roll as a thief but also as a man who falls in love. He really makes you believe hes this character. Of course all the other actors and the surprise cameo all really worked well together. Not gonna lie I cried a few different times in the movie, I laughed, and felt so many other things while watching. Im also a secret hopeless romantic so this movie is great for my fellow love story lovers. Honestly I knew from the previews it was going to have a spiritual and magical story line which I really liked. Its nice to watch films that make you think afterwards and during. So dont go expecting to see a typical story line, because thats not at all what you will get. When you go see this movie which I definitely recommend, have an open mind and just appreciate what youre watching, honestly its moving!

Review: Hercules starring Dwayne The Rock Johnson absolutely delivers on its promise to be entertaining. I went into this film with half-hearted expectations, thinking that Dwayne Johnson wouldnt fit the part well, I fully expected this to be an entire film of blood and fighting. This is far from correct. The writers of this film are fantastic going for almost A knights tale vibe to it with a ton of comedy. I honestly found myself laughing out loud much more than I found myself getting drilled with constant WWE style fighting like there was in The legend of hercules, mind you this is a very good thing. The laid back style of this film is what makes it so great, sadly this film failed in the box office, hopefully folks can see the potential and eat it up on bluray/DVD.

Review: ... but 9 / 10 for the fans that love the series.I grew up with all 3 seasons. However, while seasons 1 & 2 were brilliant, season 3 sucked to high heaven. The movie is definitely just for those that really missed the characters and just needed a fresh 107 minutes of Veronica.The story offered isnt exactly water tight, but if youre a true Veronica Mars fan you will overlook the odd logical glitch in the story.One thing that gave me a pleasant surprise was that its still jaw-dropping amazing to look at Kristen Bell. Her cute and sexy voice/smile/attitude just makes you forget about some of the truly crappy storytelling in the movie.That the movie has a rating of 7,8 (03/20/2014) doesnt surprise me. Review: Brilliantly acted, superbly written and as one would expect from a picture by Martin Scorsese, it is a masterclass of directorial craft.Showy when it needs to be, but also quiet and contemplative. The Wolf of Wall Street is the equivalent of something like Good Fellas or even more so Casino but set in the world of finance. The suits might be more expensive but the people who wear them are just as sick and violent as their street-mob counterparts. Sardonic in humor and unflinching in showing the depravity of its characters, it marks somewhat of a different approach to the world of stock-trading than Oliver Stones Wall Street.Where Stone seems more in line with Bertold Brecht who considered theater (or in this case film) a moral institution, does Scorsese take the position of the omnipresent observer of the dark side of the American and in many cases the human dream.Leonard DiCaprio gives another stellar performance of great intensity and even greater tragedy while this tale of corruption, greed and self-righteousness unfolds.Its a vast panorama that shows how during the last twenty-five to thirty years gullibility as well as our innate greed make all of us accomplices in this never-ending pyramid scheme far away from any reality.One could almost hear Scorseses clerical background come to the fore again, according to which nobody is without sin, and therefore we are all susceptible to corruption.It is our decision on which side we choose to live that makes the difference. For every individual but also society as a whole.

Review: When I saw that Doug Liman was directing and McQuarrie penning, I was interested. I liked Limans first Bourne film over Greengrass-directed nauseating shaky-cam sequels. McQuarrie is a wonderful screenwriter, and these two seemed like a perfect pair.I got what I hoped: a movie that doesnt treat me like a 10-year old. Edge of tomorrow is smart, entertaining, exciting and fun. Its an original movie as well, not a sequel or a remake (although I hear it might be inspired by a novel or graphic novel).Tom Cruise - who plays a slightly different character than usually - is good, he always brings his best. He cares about his projects and demands to do as much stunts as possible. His passion can be seen here too and he is again a joy to watch, but this isnt a movie for Cruise to carry. Liman and McQuarrie carry this movie with smart pacing, transitions and that certain magic good filmmakers seem to be able to harness at will.Emily Blunt isnt a useless sidekick, but a strong and likable character. Not annoyingly strong on the surface like some feminist ball-busting fantasy, but a real character and deserves every minute of her screen time. Bill Paxton was fun to see as a hard-ass sergeant, and Brendan Gleeson was good as well - even though his screen time is limited. All the main actors work well together, if a scene is shared.The movie flows in an interesting way and it likes to surprise you. Im not talking about forced twists, Im talking about that special situation where you dont know what happens next. Ive missed that feeling. I didnt have to pretend to care about the movie, I was interested in every minute of it. This happens rarely. And when it ends, youre satisfied. No setting up sequels, no ambiguous crap, just a solid, fitting ending.Unlike Cruises last sci-fi film Oblivion, this is definitely an action movie. At first glance it may look like a generic sci-fi action film - and granted, sometimes (suits, aliens) it does - but theres enough personality of its own. Action looks good and the camera doesnt shake around senselessly. Also, the action never goes into that overblown mode where your senses get tired and you just dont care anymore. Well done.Edge of tomorrow is a thoroughly entertaining film. Its just a summer movie, but its a smart, fun and exciting summer movie. You dont have to make excuses for its shortcomings to enjoy it. Review: As a fan of the book, I really wasnt sure I wanted to see this movie. Great books hardly ever adapt into good films. But my friend wanted to see it, so I agreed to tag along on opening night. I have to say, as a movie, it is genuinely enjoyable. The visuals are starkly entrancing without being distracting. The casting is pitch-perfect - Harrison Ford and Asa Butterfield, in particular, do a great job. The ending is particularly well done (dont worry - it wasnt really spoiled by the trailer). The problem is, its really just a caricature of the book. The drama in Battle School moves too quickly, the characters of Peter and Valentine are almost completely absent, and even Enders video game is sadly underdone. Im not usually a fan of splitting books into multiple movies, but this is one where two films would have done it justice. Also, the kids are just too old - theres an ironic moment in the movie where two officers talk about how conscripting kids under 15 used to be illegal, yet all the actors playing the kids look 15 or older!Still, its a fun ride, and if you hadnt read the book these flaws really wouldnt be apparent. Definitely see it in the theater if you can - the battle room scenes are best on a big screen.

Review: Seth Rogen and his usual entourage of stoner near-celebrities return to the screen, this time propped against the backdrop of a biblical end-of-world scenario. Theres a certain taste of playful irony in the fact that so many of these actors, Rogen, Jonah Hill and Danny McBride especially, who share the common criticism of merely playing themselves throughout their careers, are doing so literally this time around. Theyre able to play that up to ridiculous extremes and big laughs in the long-form party scene that eats up most of the first act, riffing and rolling with the punches in their never-ending quest to make the cast and crew smile. Predictably, thats the films sweet spot - a blank slate for ad-lib spoils - and when its finally cast aside to make way for a more coherent narrative (admittedly, a very loose one) their ship springs a big leak. Where a more thoroughly-incubated concept like Shaun of the Dead is able to easily blend quick, witty banter with big set pieces and wild, frenzied action, This is the End struggles to unify an equally diverse toolbox. I can get the fish-out-of-water aspect that was being fronted here, of a catered group of celebrities who were lost when their smartphones dropped off the grid, but that runs out of gas near the three-quarter mark and when the big special effects swing and miss, theres nothing left to carry us the rest of the way. Really uproariously funny at a few points, but pointlessly thin and overblown at others.

Review: I know, I know. This will incontrovertibly attract a lot of hate from die-hard Dark Knight fans, but guess what? Im one of those who thinks Nolan is the epitome of how to make a perfect superhero spectacle. Or at least, I was until tonight. This film will blow your mind. Quite literally, it is jam-packed with edge-of-your-seat action thrills and pure comedic gold. Dont be expecting a moody companion piece like that of Nolans trilogy, or Man of Steel. It keeps more in touch with Avengers, although its a lot funnier and really builds upon the upcoming Infinity Gauntlet arc. The actors are incredible, matching the character developments, the dialogue and action sequences are spectacular and the visual effects should surely earn a nod come Oscar time, as Id personally put them on par with those seen in the recent Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The run length compliments the well-scripted pacing of the movie itself, whilst plenty of interesting secondary characters litter Guardians with an ensemble cast that has exceeded anything yet seen in the Marvel/DC movie worlds. I dont pertain to the DC versus Marvel argument, but this masterpiece alone has certainly put Marvel on the front foot in terms of cinema outings, far surpassing the very enjoyable Man of Steel and, I believe, edging out Nolans trilogy and then some. I thoroughly recommend this for any with a borderline sci-fi/superhero love, and advise you to remain for the tantalising post-credits scene, although many of the non-comic fans might not get the references. Easily a perfect ten out of ten for me.

Review: I got a chance to see this movie at the film festival, and boy was I TERRifically surprised! James Wans The Conjuring is one of those rare gems in the horror industry that finds a spot beside the classic titles of horror, The Shining, Poltergeist, and The Exorcist due to James Wans ability to balance an atmospheric dreadful tale involving wonderfully crafted characters with a haunted house that had my palms sweating and my heart pounding during some of the most horrifying moments (There are a few of those; make sure you empty your bladder BEFORE entering the theater).The things that make The Shining, Poltergeist, and The Exorcist good is that if the editor were to chop out all the jump-scares and those sequences that fry an image into your brain, you would still have a moody, edgy story that makes you sympathies for the characters and their struggle. This is what Wan does right in this film, and its then that you realize horror is more than what pops out at you, or what makes you scream. Rather, its that feeling of dread you get that escalates into sheer terror and suspense, aided by shocking scares.BUT WAIT! All this not to say The Conjuring doesnt have its share of frightening visuals and pee-your-pants moments; believe me when I say I also rank this as one of the scariest movies Ive ever seen. Yet, Wan realizes here that jump scares arent what moves a story along, but what defines that classic image everyone gets in their head when someone talks about a certain horror movie that frightened them the most, kind of like a celebritys autograph in the corner of a huge poster of their face.All of this hence to say, The Conjuring is an exceptional piece of film that pulls all the right stops to frighten the audience, leaving a lasting impression on your mind as well the recently tired genre of horror.Movie Score: 10/10!

Review: Fast & Furious over the last few installments has become all about action. And the latest outing takes it a step further. Almost 20% of the movie is comprised of action sequences. And at the expense of action, plot, writing, characters all take a backseat. But no ones complaining. Why ? Because the action makes up for all of it.Do the above statements sound cliché ??? The movies plot is full of such silly dialogs so its best ignored in the current context. What works is the action - Lin and his crew bring us some of the most ridiculously outrageous and boldly conceived action sequences. Theres an intense chase through London in the initial reels and also a race later on. Theres a whole plane take-off-crash sequence towards the end that youve probably got a glimpse of in the trailers. The girls are no slouches either and we see an intense hand-to-hand fight of sorts between Michelle Rodriguezs Letty and Gina Caranos Riley.But the movies best sequence is undoubtedly the 10 minute Tank chase across the freeway that involves most of the cast and culminates in a breathtaking catch (about which Id not say any further). The camera cuts like crazy, music is pulsating and that single sequence is probably worth the price of the movie ticket.Apart from action, Furious 6 doesnt have much going for it. Dialog is standard, at times even silly and predictable, characters are flat, performances are decent. The car chases and night scenes got me so involved, I actually felt a bit strange leaving the theater and coming out into the real worlds broad daylight. And the post-credits scene is simply, a treat which makes the next installment in the series worth looking forward to. Suffice it to say that in the end, the movie drifts full circle.Watch it for the action, and for the action alone. If you expect any sort of character development or family issues like the first installment had, youll be disappointed. Else, youre in for one hell of a ride.Score: 7 / 10

Review: A highly trained, retired field operative resorts to violence as the only way to free a Russian prostitute from brutal Russian men who are part of an international crime organization. The many years of retirement didnt show any sign of rust on Robert McCall (Washington) as he ran through his adversaries, dismantling one after another, without batting an eye. He made it look too easy. These bad Russian men had nothing for him, which is probably the biggest problem with this film. There is nothing interesting about a Good vs Evil film with weak bad guys. The filmmakers did work hard at trying to make Teddy, played by Marton Csokas, look ruthless and deadly. But I was never convinced, and I doubt whether the many who saw this film with me at the Toronto International Film Festival were convinced as well.I found the film rather boring for the most part, with a setup unusually longer than anything Hollywood released in decades. The dialogue was heavy handed. The supporting roles didnt provide nothing more than their vulnerability to the scum of society, which beckoned on a hero like McCall to teach them a lesson or two.And as I stated in my summary, you have already seen this film a thousand times already: the bad guys shooting big, scary guns and rarely grazing the hero, the hero walking away in slow motion from an explosion he caused, bad guys tracking hero down in this sort of cat-and-mouse thing, damsels in distress, high octane martial arts. Wait, the filmmakers did try to make the film unique by excluding a car chase and having McCall kill each and every bad guy in the most unique way every time. A bullet to the cranium wasnt good enough. No. He had to use methods like overflowing bathroom sinks to electrocute someone. He seemed like he was trying to one-up himself every time. The hero doesnt make any mistakes in the process, even taking the time to catch a fly ball to win the company baseball game. The way he swooped in, in slow motion, and snatched that ball from the joker character who thought he had it was roll-your-eyes worthy and completely laughable.However, when the film got going it started to be exactly what I expected; an entertaining, highly stylized, popcorn film. At the same time, being Fuquas weakest directorial effort since his first film, I cannot recommend it. 5/10
